Glenn Kaplan was traveling through Rhode Island this week and happened to sit at the table where, on May 32, 1979, the Big East Conference was founded.
While still an impressive conference when it comes to basketball, the Big East is a shadow of its former self. In 2011 the conference turned down a TV contract from ESPN of what was later reported to be a nine-year deal, worth $1.17 billion. This happened just prior to significant conference realignment within the NCAA from 2010 to 2013.
The rest is history. In 2013 ESPN and the new Big East signed a deal for seven years. The contract is worth $130 million through the 2019-20 fiscal year.
